Orthokeratology with Our Bronx Vistasite Eye Care Optometrist
At Vistasite Eye Care in the Bronx, our team of eye care professionals is proud to offer our patients a wide range of vision correction and eye treatment options, personalized to each patient's unique needs and preferences. For patients who require vision correction, but do not prefer to or cannot wear glasses or contact lenses, orthokeratology treatment might be the best option. With orthokeratology, we provide our patients another option for vision correction without the need for surgery, spectacles, or contact lenses.
Myopia Treatment with Orthokeratology Lenses
Myopia, commonly referred to as nearsightedness, is caused by an eye with an overly curved or long cornea which causes light to focus just in front of the retina, rather than directly on the retina (where light is gathered and sent as electric signals to the brain).
Patients who suffer from myopia have difficulty seeing objects at a distance. This might mean that without the aid of corrective lenses, they are unable to read road signs, drive, play sports, or see to take notes in school. Uncorrected myopia often leads to squinting, eye strain, and headaches.
Designed specifically to treat myopia, orthokeratology uses soft gas-permeable contact lenses to temporarily correct the shape of the wearer's eyes. Patients wear orthokeratology lenses through the night. While the patient sleeps, the orthokeratology lenses gently reshape the curvature of the cornea, correcting visual acuity. When the patient awakes in the morning, he or she removes the orthokeratology lenses in order to see clearly throughout the day. For lasting visual acuity correction, the orthokeratology lenses must be worn every night to maintain the eyes' proper shape.
Is Orthokeratology Right for You?
Orthokeratology is a great option for patients who are not candidates for corrective surgeries and who do not or cannot wear corrective lenses throughout the day due to athletic activities or work requirements. Our eye doctors can work with you to determine whether your case of myopia is a candidate for orthokeratology treatment.
