Eye Glasses Q & A

What are Eyeglasses?

Eyeglasses are a simple way to improve your vision when your eyes may not be naturally allowing you to see as well as you should. They can be worn at any age to help you effectively sharpen your vision and see more clearly.

Eyeglass lenses are shaped differently depending on the eye condition responsible for your vision problems. By placing a curved, clear lens in front of your own misshapen lens, you may see the world more clearly.

Why Do I Need Eyeglasses?

Generally, there are four reasons you may need to wear glasses to improve your vision. Each of these are due to the shape of your eye, not because of any underlying medical condition.

  1. Myopia (Nearsightedness): This condition occurs when you’re able to see clearly up close, but unable to see things well from far away. If you find yourself squinting or straining to see or read things in the distance, you may be nearsighted.
  2. Hyperopia (Farsightedness): This condition occurs when you’re able to see things far away clearly, but have trouble looking at things up close. If you strain your eyes or get headaches when reading or doing work with your hands, you may be farsighted.
  3. Astigmatism: Astigmatism is an issue with the shape of your cornea, a part of your eye. Often, you may have this condition along with your nearsightedness or farsightedness.
  4. Presbyopia: This condition is very common as you get older, especially after age 40. Presbyopia generally worsens with age, and often makes it extremely difficult to look at things very closely.

How Do I Get Eyeglasses?

Your optometrist at VistaSite Eye Care needs to do a thorough eye exam and take some measurements of your eye to determine if you need eyeglasses, and if so, what prescription to make the lenses.

Your prescription is a series of numbers that reflect the spacing of your eyes, as well as the curve the eyeglass lens need to have so they can effectively correct your vision. You need annual appointments to recheck your eyes to make sure your prescription doesn’t need to be changed.

If you would like to discuss getting eyeglasses to correct your vision, call or book your appointment online with VistaSite Eye Care today.
