LASIK Q & A

What is LASIK Surgery?

Refractive surgery is a revolutionary approach to correcting common eye problems like hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness), and astigmatism so you no longer need eyeglasses or contact lenses. LASIK is the most common type of refractive eye surgery performed in the United States.

LASIK technology uses a highly accurate laser to alter the shape of your eye, correcting inaccurate light refraction caused by misshapen elements. By correcting the shape of your lens or cornea, light is then able to refract more effectively, resulting in clearer vision.

How Does Co-Management of My LASIK Surgery Work?

The team at VistaSite Eye Care is proud to work with local, hand-selected eye surgeons to offer this state-of-the art corrective technique. Working as a co-managed team of health care professionals, your optometrist and an eye surgeon collaborate throughout the procedure to correct your vision together.

Your optometrist first works with you to determine if LASIK surgery is appropriate for your vision problems, and if so they then refer you to a highly trained surgeon. Your optometrist works closely with your eye surgeon to provide excellent follow-up care after the procedure to ensure the best possible outcome for correction of your vision.

What Should I Expect During LASIK Surgery?

Before your planned procedure, you have an opportunity to ask your optometrist any questions or voice any concerns.

The LASIK procedure itself takes approximately 10-15 minutes, and you’ll be given a mild sedative and be seated in a comfortable, reclining chair. Numbing drops are administered and your eyes and eyelids are positioned properly before your eye surgeon makes a small incision in your cornea. Guided by a computer, the laser corrects your vision and the eye surgeon then replaces your cornea

You’ll need someone to drive you home, and will not be able to return to work the day of your procedure. Some blurriness is normal at first, but should clear up by the time of your follow-up appointment at VistaSite Eye Care the next day.

The optometrists at VistaSite Eye Care are proud to be part of a skilled team offering this innovative procedure that gives you freedom from glasses and contact lenses, improving your vision for the long term. If you would like to discuss if LASIK is right for you, call or book an appointment online today.
